The San Mark Square side close to the lagoon is called Piazzetta, it was the place where the ships of  the Serenissima Republic shored. Here there are two high columns with on the top the two Venice patron saints: the San Mark Leon and San Teodoro, in Venetian dialect Marco and Todaro.
Still today Venetians are used to say  “to be between Marco and Todaro” , but it’s not a wish, between the two columns there was in fact the gallows!

Legends also tell that the columns were three, but one fell down between the ship and the bank, and disappeared in the lagoon mud…
