This is a very useful tip.
We are not talking about traffic lights, they don’t exist in Venice, the green “verde” is the colour of the seaweeds that grow on stones, walls, steps and all the surfaces that usually are dipped in canals and lagoon.
This plant carpet is very slippery. Venetians know it very well, but tourists, with low tide, often go down few steps for a better picture or to see a gondola or to feel the water… and plunk down in the water.  Can be dangerous, the water isn’t clean and steps are hard.
So, mind the green.
