A lonely place in Venice

6 April, 2007

Also now – during the crowded Easter holiday – you can find in Venice a lonely place. It’s the San Francesco del Deserto island, a little island in the middle of the lagoon, here the legends tell that saint Francis of Assisi stopped  in 1220 coming back from the East. If you love Corto Maltese, sure you will remember this place in his stories.

Now just few monks still live there, they spend their time studying and working at the garden.  There aren’t public boats that stop in the Island, but if you arrive by private boat (or a taxi) you can visit it for a couple of hours in the morning and a couple in the afternoon (Monday is closed); and enjoy the peace and the silence of this timeless place.
