Madonna della Salute 2015
21 November, 2015
It’s nice to see every year how Venetians remember this old tradition and the vow made by a Doge almost 400 years ago. It creates a link between old and new generations.
Old and New Ghetto
14 April, 2015
Maybe you don’t know that the “Ghetto Nuovo” was the old one, and the “Ghetto Vecchio” the newest.
The first Jews in fact went to live in the island called the “new foundry” (Getto nuovo), and only when they grew in number also occupied the area called “old foundry” (Getto vecchio).
The Venice old pawnshop
12 March, 2015
This Palazzo has been the Venice pawnshop for many years (1834 – 1971) and its wonderful halls were used to host the most poor people.
For this reason, in the calli close by, you can still find some old signs like this ” ANTICA AGENZIA AUTORIZZATA ALLE OPERAZIONI PRESSO IL MONTE DI PIETA”

This is a very special photo my dad took in 1960 from a window of Palazzo Donà delle Rose.
A kid is sleeping on a Burcio (big Venice boat) waiting for his father making some deliveries.
The “real” Cathedral
7 March, 2012
The 25th March the new Patriarch Francesco Moraglia, the 48°, will officially enter in Saint Mark’s Cathedral.
But maybe you don’t know that Saint Mark is not always been the Venice Cathedral. From 1451 to 1807 the Venice Cathedral was San Pietro di Castello (designed by Andrea Palladio).

Old words hidden on a bridge parapet
2 June, 2009
Looking carefully at the iron parapet of the Borgoloco bridge (close to Santa Maria Formosa) you can see these three letters: W V E.
In Venice it’s said that it means W Vittorio Emanuele II, the King of Piemonte (1849-1878) and then of Italy, when Italy was created in 1861.
Venice became part of Italy in 1866, the bridge is surely oldest, but we don’t know when the parapet was build, so we don’t know if these letters was a bravery act towards the Austrian or a celebration.
